UK Traffic

Traffic in the UK’s major cities is returning to pre-pandemic levels or, in some cases, is even exceeding it…

Traffic at Pre-Covid Levels (And Beyond)

Large parts of the world are slowly, but surely, recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. In the UK, this has meant that urban traffic and congestion has begun to return to pre-pandemic levels and, in some areas of the country, has even exceeded it.

Research conducted by Inrix Inc, a mobility analytics company, revealed that 72% of the nation’s urban areas have pre-covid levels of delays or worse. It’s now warned the Government and local authorities that action is needed in order to avoid disruption to both drivers and the economy.

London, as you might expect, is the worst hit by urban traffic. Drivers are, on average, losing 156 hours due to congestion (actually 5% above pre-pandemic delays). This caused local drivers to lose an average of £1,377 throughout 2022. The capital was followed by Bristol and Manchester, where drivers lost £805 and £742 respectively.

Overall, the average Brit  lost 80 hours due to urban traffic in 2022. For perspective, that’s up by seven hours increase since 2021. Nevertheless, the average remains down by 35 from 2019.

A Mixed-Bag

Bob Pishue, transportation analyst and author of the report, recognised that rising levels of traffic is at least indicative of a ‘return to normal’.

He said,  “It is great to see civic and commercial life returning to normal, but unfortunately, we’re seeing congestion inching closer to, if not exceeding, pre-pandemic levels. We must manage congestion while improving mobility and accessibility in cities to avoid it hurting economic recovery and impacting the quality of life of commuters and residents”.
