Soaring Vehicle Thefts
According to the Home Office, there were 101,000 vehicles thefts in England & Wales throughout 2021; more than double the figure that was previously released by the DVLA. Moreover, a paltry 28% of the stolen vehicles were recovered in comparison to 80% back in 2006.
However, vehicles fitted with tracking devices have a substantially higher chance of being recovered. Data from Tracker Network UK has revealed that those fitted with stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) technology have a 95% chance of being recovered.
The company’s data supports suggestions that thefts are becoming more prevalent. It recovered stolen vehicles collectively worth £5 million during the first six months of the year; a 13% increase of the same period in 2021.
Organised Gangs
Clive Wain, head of police liaison at Tracker, commented on the figures. He said, “organised crime gangs are very astute, keeping pace with developing security technologies at a disturbing rate. Indeed, our own data revealed that keyless car theft accounted for 94% of stolen vehicle’s we recovered last year, up from 92% the previous year and a record”.
He continued, “as well as the obvious financial loss of an asset and resulting increase in insurance premiums the theft of a fleet vehicle can affect the wider company too. Businesses risk days or weeks of lost work and revenue, not to mention the loss of costly vehicle contents which can often represent the driver’s livelihood”.
