Hyundai, the South Korean car manufacturer, has launched a new marketing initiative designed to convince Brits to use a new, global pronunciation of its brand…
A New Pronunciation for Hyundai
How do you pronounce ‘Hyundai?’ If you’re from the UK, chances are it’s ‘Hy-un-dai’. A new marketing initiative being launched by the company, however, seeks to change this. An advert, appearing on radio, TV and online highlights the Ioniq 5 electric crossover and concludes with “it’s Hyun-day, by the way”.
The overall campaign seeks to get people to rethink the Hyundai brand entirely. It states “if you thought you knew our cars and how to say our name, maybe it’s time to think again”. It represents a relatively bold move for the company, as even subtle brand changes can be risky – especially for those that are already established in the public’s imagination.
‘Proudly Korean’
Ashley Andrew, Hyundai Motor UK managing director, commented on the new approach to Hyundai’s brand. He said, “Hyundai is a young, innovative and progressive brand which has transformed with great speed. We are proudly Korean with real character and purpose. 2023 is the perfect time for us to properly reflect this in the UK, with a wealth of exciting new product to be launched, including the incredible new Ioniq 6.
He concluded, “with this campaign, we want to inject a little humour and personality to our brand which we hope will encourage more people to learn more about Hyundai”.
So, what do you think about the new pronunciation? Will it catch on, and will you be using it?
