Realistic Timeframes for Zero Emission Zones
An increasing number of local authorities are implementing zero emission zones (ZEZs), or similar schemes, in order to improve local air-quality. Oxford, for instance, launched a pilot ZEZ scheme earlier this year. Designed to address air-quality issues on inner-city streets, it sees non-electric vehicles charged £10 a day in order to enter.
The measure, and others like it, have proven to be controversial. Critics suggest that they risk harming local businesses or even pricing poorer drivers off of the road. Their proponents, however, argue that they’re vital in preventing deaths via poor air-quality and tackling the Climate Crisis.
Venson, a car leasing company, has suggested that ZEZs do come with a number of advantages; but that they need to be implemented on the basis of ‘realistic’ timeframes in order to avoid harming local businesses.
Businesses Under Pressure
Alison Bell, operations director for Venson Automotive Solutions, commented on the issue. She said, “clearly there is an urgent need to tackle COs emissions in cities. However, the Government needs to set out realistic timelines for the introduction of zero emission zones in the run up to 2030 road to zero strategy deadline”.
She continued, “for many businesses who are still recovering from the impact of the pandemic, and now adjusting to the rising fuel, staff and energy costs, the prospect of yet another financial pressure being introduced in the next 12 to 18 months is daunting. As businesses struggle to keep absorbing financial burdens, further increases in operating costs will at some stage mean increased costs for the customer”.
This, then, is the challenge political authorities face. We face a mounting and critical climate emergency, but meaningful action has reverberations through broader society. What to prioritise, and how to manage the consequences, is now the key question they face.
