Audi has announced that all of its new cars will be all-electric from 2026, as its diesels and petrols are gradually phased out…
Audi to Ditch ICE
The electrification of the automotive industry is continuing at a pace, and Audi has no intention of falling behind. It’s announced that it intends to ensure that all of its new cars are, by 2026, all-electric. In addition, it’ll be phasing out the internal combustion engine entirely by 2033. Production of its last internally developed engine will start in four years time.
That said, the company does see a future for ICE in some markets; especially in China. Continued demand there will linger for some time, and it’s expected that combustion engines will be made there locally. Overall though, the brand’s range of EVs will exceed 20 models by 2025.
Technology, Not Bans?
Markus Duesmann, Audi CEO, has stated that the company intends to become carbon neutral by 2050. He said, “I don’t believe in the success of bans. I believe in the success of technology and innovation. With this roadmap, we are creating the clarity necessary to make a decisive and powerful transition to the electric age. We’re sending the signal that Audi is ready”.
Nevertheless, the company will be investing heavily in the development of its final internal combustion engine; right up until the point of discontinuation. According to Duesmann, it’ll “be the best we’ve ever built”. No technical specifications for the engine have been revealed as of yet. But we can safely say that’ll boast impressive performance figures and will be cleaner than previous iterations; at least by ICE-standards.
