EV-Specific Tyres Improve Range

Range-anxiety, real or imagined, remains a barrier for some drivers when it comes to electric vehicles. One way they could get past it, at least in part, is by using EV-specific tyres. That’s according to the tyre manufacturer Michelin. It’s conducted a study of the benefits of the tyres, concluding that they can improve an EV’s total range by up to 10%.

The tyre giant determined that EV-specific tyres could provide drivers with an extra 8.3 million miles in battery range. For perspective, that’s equivalent to 25.7 miles per EV on average. Despite this, most British motorists are unaware of the availability of the special tyre requirements for EVs, and the benefits they can provide.

For instance, 72% of drivers aren’t aware of the range benefits of certain tyres. A paltry 28% were aware of EV-specific tyres at all.

‘Making Use of Every Opportunity’ 

John Howe, Managing Director for UK and Ireland at Michelin, has noted the saving potential of EV-specific tyres. He’s also urged drivers to make use of every opportunity to get the most range out of their vehicles, too.

He said, “a great deal of innovation and research goes into producing a tyre that can increase the range of an electric car. It requires the incorporation of several new tyre technologies to lower rolling resistance, increase efficiency and optimise the handling characteristics of electric cars”.

He continued, “however, to truly get the most out of an EV, drivers should ensure they are making use of every opportunity available to them. To this end, we have provided our expert-recommended Top Tips for increasing EV battery range”.
