New research has revealed that tens of thousands of breakdowns last year were caused by faults with tyres…

Tyre Breakdowns Revealed

New research has revealed that 41,500 of the breakdowns that took place in 2021 were tyre-related. For perspective, that’s 20% of the total. Worryingly, tyres are also increasingly to blame for incidents. For example, 35,892 breakdowns were caused by tyre faults in 2020. Thus far in 2022 there have already been 19,300 breakdowns attributable to tyres, too.

Crucially, many of these breakdowns could have been avoided had drivers been conducting some simple, straightforward checks. Which is why National Highways is launching a new campaign to encourage motorists to inspect their tyres more regularly.

The Importance of Simple Checks

Jeremy Phillips, National Highways head of road safety, commented on the new campaign. He said, “we are reminding drivers to check their vehicles, particularly the tyres, before setting off. Unsafe tyres put you and others at risk as well as running the risk of attracting a hefty fine and penalty points”.

He continued, “a simple check on tyre tread and pressure could prevent a breakdown and make sure you get to your destination safe and sound”.

For fleets, tyre checks are especially important as regards to duty of care. Employers have a responsibility to their drivers, and members of the public, to ensure that their vehicles are safe and suitable to be on the road network. A failure to meet duty of care obligations can lead to sizable fines and even criminal convictions for fleet decision-makers.
