New research suggests that the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by road collisions is rising…
Road Collisions Causing More Deaths
The number of deaths and serious injuries caused by road collisions are on the rise. That’s according to Churchill Motor Insurance, which recently analysed data compiled by the Department for Transport. There were 223,000 collisions recorded between 2018 and 2020. Over this period, the number of deaths or serious injuries increased from 24% to 28%. That means there were 43 more ‘serious’ events following a road accident.
According to data recorded by various police forces, most collisions (63%) were caused by driver error. Failing to look properly, misjudging a vehicle’s path or speed and making a poor manoeuvre were involved in 23% of the incidents. Not far behind were ‘injudicious actions’ at 20%. These include the likes of ignoring traffic signals, speeding or conducting an illegal manoeuvre.
‘Deeply Concerning’
Nicholas Mantel, head of Churchill Motor Insurance, commented on the rising deaths and serious injuries. He said, “the rising number of incidents on our roads leading to death or serious injury is deeply concerning. We know the main causes of these incidents are often down to errors and poor reactions, something that could easily be prevented”.
He continued, “avoiding alcohol consumption, getting a good night’s sleep, and focusing on the road rather than multi-tasking, can all help motorists have safer journeys and reduce these risk factors. If all road users just take a few extra seconds to check around them for potential hazards, our roads will be a safer place for all”.
