Fleet managers and decision-makers within SMEs are struggling to contend with an increasing amount of data, according to new research…

SME Fleets Struggling With Data

New research, conducted by Vimcar, suggests that SME fleets are struggling to deal with an increasing amount of data. In a survey, it discovered that just shy of a quarter of fleet managers (24%) spend at least half of their working days dealing with spreadsheets. Half of them also believe that such work prevents them from focussing on other, potentially more important, tasks.

Overall, 60% of the respondents said they were using digital spreadsheets; with just 10% saying they were still using a pen and paper. Some 79% admitted to using more than five spreadsheets to keep track of crucial information or data; including the likes of mileage, maintenance schedules and costs. Amazingly, one in ten of the respondents said they use in excess of 30 spreadsheets.

In addition, 46% of the decision-makers found setting up spreadsheets too time-consuming. Meanwhile 37% said the process leaves them open to making mistakes and 63% admitted to having missed deadlines.

A Better Way?

In order to help struggling SME fleets, Vimcar is releasing what it calls Fleet Admin in September. It’s software specifically designed to help SME fleets keep on top of their data; including fleet costs, mileage updates and servicing / maintenance reminders.

Ronald Clancy, UK country manager for Vimcar, commented on the research. He said, “it’s clear from our research that those running fleets in SMEs are feeling defeated by their data, and it is having a negative impact on their businesses. Running a successful fleet starts with how its managed and fleet managers cannot be expected to run things efficiently while still relying on admin tools that aren’t fit for purpose”.

He added, “it is critical that fleet managers are well equipped with an automated and digitised management system that not only streamlines their data and daily tasks, but allows them to view, evaluate and compare the data held within the system”.
