Fleets have a responsibility to keep their fleet drivers safe. Here’s five ways businesses can foster a culture of safety…

Identify Risky Behaviours

It’s crucial that businesses identify risky behaviours amongst their drivers early. Anything from using a mobile phone whilst behind the wheel to not taking a sufficient amount of breaks need to be factored in. Understanding why’s these are risky behaviours, and why your drivers might be demonstrating them, is crucial in formulating a plan centered on improving safety. Moreover, how are these behaviours to be identified? Telematics and regular reviews are both viable options.

Focus on Education

It’s a fleet’s responsibility to properly educate drivers when it comes to safety standards and expectations. It’s not enough just to pursue a ‘commonsense’ approach. Any plan needs to be properly explained to the drivers and their feedback should help to inform it. In addition, the business should offer training opportunities to those that want it. Training will become increasingly important as businesses transition to electric vehicles.

Enshrine your Policies and Values

You should develop formalised policies when it comes to your fleet drivers. This prevents confusion and mitigates the risk of ad hoc decision-making. Proper policy documents will also make it much easier to settle disputes should they arise later down the line.

Enforce Rules Effectively

There’s no point in establishing rules if they’re not enforced effectively. Simply producing a safety policy won’t suddenly change driver behaviour. Driver behaviour needs to be properly monitored. Should rules be broken, a proper disciplinary approach needs to be consulted.

Utilise your Fleet Driver’s Data

A fleet is only as good as the data it uses to inform its process. Telematics is often crucial in determining how your drivers are behaving on the road; and what impact they’re having on your fleet’s expenses and overall perception. Think about what you need to know and how to secure the information.
